The OASI FAMIGLIA “Santa Maria di Cana” is housed in the former Capuchin friary, built in Sambuca di Sicilia (AG) in 1614 and left unusable after the earthquakes of 1968. In March 1996 ownership of the building was transferred from the «Palermo Province of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin» to the Oasi Cana Association. To make the building usable, works have already been carried out for the consolidation, restoration and rebuilding of the property intended to house the Oasi Famiglia, a centre for the welcome, promotion and formation of couples and families and for the welcome of people with disabilities.
The first phase of the works (begun in November 2004 – after a wait of more than 10 years!) is now complete and has involved the general consolidation of the building, the restoration of the church and some adjoining rooms. For the completion of the work we are still waiting … and, God willing, for some benefactor to come along.
In particular, in this building which houses the church and meeting halls already in use, we are thinking of “after we are gone” — that is, when there will no longer be parents or other relatives able to care for people with disabilities.
