    MARIA MARTA: <\/strong>Your Holiness, as in the rest of the world, in our Brazil too the number of failed marriages continues to grow.<\/p>\n

    My name is Maria Marta, this is Manoel Angelo. We have been married for 34 years and we are already grandparents. As a doctor and a family psychotherapist we meet a great many families, and we notice in the conflicts between couples an ever more marked difficulty in forgiving and in accepting forgiveness; yet in a number of cases we have found the desire and the will to build a new union, something lasting, also for the children born of the new union.<\/p>\n

    MANOEL ANGELO: <\/strong>Some of these remarried couples would like to draw close to the Church again, but when they see the Sacraments refused to them their disappointment is great. They feel excluded, branded by a judgment against which there is no appeal.<\/p>\n

    These great sufferings wound deeply those involved; they are wounds that also become part of the world, and they are our wounds too, wounds of all humanity.<\/p>\n

    Holy Father, we know that these situations and these people are very close to the Church's heart: what words and what signs of hope can we offer them?<\/em><\/p>\n

    HOLY FATHER:<\/strong> Dear friends, thank you for your work as family psychotherapists, which is very necessary. Thank you for all that you do to help these suffering people. In fact, this problem of the divorced and remarried is one of the great sufferings of the Church today. And we have no simple recipes. The suffering is great, and we can only help the parishes and individuals to help these people to bear the suffering of this divorce. I would say that prevention would naturally be very important, that is, deepening from the outset the falling in love into a profound, mature decision; and also accompaniment during the marriage, so that families are never alone but are truly accompanied on their way. And then, as regards these people, we must say \u2013 as you have said \u2013 that the Church loves them, but they must see and feel this love. It seems to me a great task for a parish, for a Catholic community, truly to do everything possible so that they feel loved and accepted, that they are not \u00aboutside\u00bb even if they cannot receive absolution and the Eucharist: they must see that even so they live fully in the Church. Perhaps, if absolution in Confession is not possible, a permanent contact with a priest, with a guide of the soul, is nonetheless very important, so that they may see that they are accompanied and guided. Then it is also very important that they feel that the Eucharist is real and truly shared if they genuinely enter into communion with the Body of Christ. Even without the \u00abbodily\u00bb reception of the Sacrament, we can be spiritually united to Christ in his Body. And it is important to make this understood. May they truly find the possibility of living a life of faith, with the Word of God, with the communion of the Church, and may they see that their suffering is a gift to the Church, because in this way they serve everyone, also by defending the stability of love and of Marriage; and that this suffering is not only a physical and psychological torment, but is also a suffering within the community of the Church for the great values of our faith. I think that their suffering, if truly accepted interiorly, is a gift to the Church. They must know this: that precisely in this way they serve the Church, they are at the heart of the Church.
